01-08-16 Greek ‘NewGenMotors’ team competes in model 4x4 auto competition

Six students from the Filothei General High School participated in one of the biggest auto technology competitions, the “4x4 Land Rover in Schools’ competition, held in Birmingham, UK, between 4-6 July, 2016.

Operating under severe time constraints and a low budget, the Greek team placed 18^th out of 21 delegations.

The “NewGen Motors” team was the only state-run school selected to represent Greece after participating in the nationwide Formula “F1 in Schools’ competition, in which their model automobile project placed seventh.

“The  Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge is an international challenge aimed at key stage 3, 4 and 5 students in school / young people  aged 11 – 19 years old in any out of school initiative (i.e. STEM Clubs, Scouts, Cadets, Guides, Youth Clubs, etc...). The challenge involves 4 to 6 team members working together to design and build a radio controlled 4-wheel-drive (4x4) vehicle, to set specifications, that can successfully negotiate a specially designed test track that emulates real life and what a full scale 4x4 vehicle can do. The NewGen Motors team that went to the UK was comprised of students Christos Gagas, Nikolas Economou, and Costas Athanasiou. Other members of the team were Costis Kagioulis, Yannis Iatroudis, and Artemisia Douzou. High School Principal Petros Matzakos, physics teacher Georgios Korakas, and chemistry teacher Vaios Basbarelis were responsible for oversight of the project.
